Let me ask you something. How much money are you willing to spend on this. If you're going to be an Ordinary Seaman, you'll be up against a lot of competition. You should get further training to give yourself an edge.
Not trying to talk you out of this, just being realistic.

The crabbing time will work if you want a 100 ton license later but let's get the Z-card out of the way first. Also, your time on any boat is attractive to the creek outfits in the tug industry. OK. Here's a checklist of the stuff you're going to need to compile. www.uscg.mil/stcw/checklists/MLD-FM-REC-104_Entry_Level_Ratings_MMDs.pdf It looks like you don't need a full physical for the work you're after so try this form instead of the physical. It's a competency type of sign off. www.uscg.mil/stcw/download-docs/CG-719KE_(03-04).pdfThis shouldn't cost as much as a whole physical. It's basically a sheet that any medical person can use to tell the CG that you're generally in good health. If you need more than just entry-level z-card then we're going to have to get you a whole physical. You are going to need a drug test. Here is the instructions on how to do that. www.uscg.mil/stcw/download-docs/form_mld-fm-rec-101_rev04.pdfThis should keep you busy for a few days. I'll keep checking the forum. Let me know how you make out. Oh yeah. What area are you from? Sounds like Chesapeake Bay?

You don't hang out with a guy named Ted, do you?
The DUI is a good thing to bring up now. Part of the application is a release of your Nation Drivers' Record. It will come back as "hit" with no explanation to the Coast Guard what it is. Then they'll ask you to round up a copy of your driver's record to verify what the points are for. That will take some more of your time. NOTE: Save some time now and get a copy of your driving record from any state that you have points in. The DUI? One of the records should show the disposition of the case- over and satisfied or not. It's about ten years old so you should start now writing a nice letter about how it was then, this is now, and you're a good guy now with better judgement and all of that. They ARE going to ask you to account for it but it won't be a deal breaker.
Keep on keepin on. This process is a pain but it's been done plenty of times by folks in worse shape than you.

The deal is DO NOT LIE on the application. Tell the puddle cops you had the DUI and then do a write up on the incident. If you do not tell them about any bust and they find it you will not get your MMD and they can also fine you.The puddle cops will forgive you for the DUI as long as it was when you were young and dumb and as long as you tell them about it. I am in the same boat. DUI and suspended license 35 years ago. I thought it was off my record but its still out there. My Local REC said not to worry about getting the info from the court but make sure I check it off on the form and tell them what happened

After reading some of the posts on this forum I guess that I am one of the lucky ones to get a job working as an OS. Before employment I took the basic STCW. Now I have been sailing for a year, I have taken the AB , tankerman PIC, Lifeboat PSC courses. I have received my tankerman endorsement on my MMD, But they declined my application for an AB Special, due to the fact that I have not completed the RFPNW (rate forming part of navigational watch). These requirements have changed since I inquired about them from USCG in December. At that time for an AB Special the RFPNW was not a requirement. So now the only difference between the numerous AB positions is the amount of accrued seatime. Bottom line keep spending your money & you will get the AB ticket & then make the big $.
