There have been recent changes to the medical/physical requirements for mariners. For pilots and those who sail under STCW regulations, a valid Coast Guard physical must be up to date every two years. Pilots know who they are, but boatmen sailing offshore and in some waters have been asking who among them needs to keep up the STCW date of the new medical cards.
Which date are we talking about? See this attachment? That's part of medical card. The STCW date is circled. The next date, National, is the one that matches your MMD. The third date is for pilots.
Do you need to have your STCW date current? If you answer "Yes" to any of the following questions, you need to have this date current.
Is you tug over 200 gross tons?
Do you sail more than 200 miles away from American beaches?
Do you sail to foreign countries? (Canada, Mexico, and the Islands counts.) Now do you?
Do you trips go more than 600 miles in distance? Like from Boston to Corpus Christi?
If you do any of this stuff, get the attached physical form and get down to an occupational health place for a quick physical. You've done these before.
Hit this link for a printable form. ---> Coast Guard Physical Form It's going to tell you that you need to have Adobe Reader to open it but you probably have it. When the form opens up, save it somewhere that you can find it again. Or print it.
Once you have your physical completed and you are declared competent to work on a vessel, call the National Maritime Center and tell them you'd like the e-mail address for the REC that you do you MMD business with. Their number is 1-888-427-5662.
Scan the completed form and send it as an attachment to the REC. They'll know what to do with it. If you can't scan forms, ask the NMC for a fax number, or, you might have to send it to them through the regular mail. Your choice.
Do this. You company is probably already hollering at you about it. If anyone has anything else that would be helpful, we'd all appreciate it.
