I'd like to hear honest opinions from tugboaters who have been in the business for a while. My question is: How old is too old to start as an AB? I only ask because I am seriously considering it. I am 47 years old and in excellent shape. I probably have a couple thousand days u/w credit from my military time. I'd just like to how much of an uphill battle it might be. Thanks in advance for any responses. ..Be safe

I'm 51 and have been off the boats for 25 years but Kirby just hired me on. Sadly I have to go to a 12 day deckape school. Right now it seems the industry is hurting for old timers. Lotsa kids out there that are only interested in getting into the wheelhouse as fast as they can

Seems like the average age of the guys at my company is the mid-forties. That means we have lots older still goin' for it.
It all depends on your energy level.

The age varies in my mob but I guess the average would be the mid forties, the hardest part down here is getting the foot in the door, after that when its six in the morn and you have been on the sticks for twelve hours, the conversation must be amusing (not necessarily accurate or true) and the coffee flowing, go for it.
