How did the Kills around Staten Island come to be called the Kills?
We all figured it's a Dutch thing.

"Kill" is dutch for creek. The Kills in NY were originally mere marshy creeks, I believe their natural maximum depth was originally in the low teens. In comparison, the current dreding eventually aims for a 50ft project depth through the KVK to newark bay to allow for larger container traffic. Just need to do something with that bridge next....
